Photobioreactors - Elara ST

Solaris Biotech Solutions

Volume range: 4.0 liters
Vessel: Borosilicate glass jacketed vessel
Use: Bacterial/Cell Culture

The Solaris ELARA ST photobioreactor is a stirred jacketed photobioreactor ideal for phototrophic organisms, including moss, microalgae, bacteria and plant cells.
This photobioreactor is suitable for batch, fed-batch and continuous processes. Different configurations are available, choosing from Rushton/Marine/Pitched-Blade impellers and Toro/Sintered sparger.
ELARA ST offers a wide range of measurement and control options, including temperature, pH, dO2, dCO2, redox, antifoam, level, conductivity, weight, cell density (viable cells). Modbus digital sensors reduce background noise and guarantee a quick response time.
ELARA ST provides different gas mixing strategies with up to 5 TMFC and/or solenoid valves. The light spectrum is selectable and the light intensity is dimmable from 0-100% up to 3000 μmol(photon)/m2. The glass jacket is fully removable and cleanable for improved heat transfer during autoclaving.

Applications
The Solaris ELARA ST laboratory photobioreactor can be used for applications within basic research, process development and optimization, scale-up and small production, scale-up and scale-down studies and education – in the following application fields:

  • Nutraceutical: dietary supplements, food additives
  • Cosmeceutical: bioactive ingredients, hyaluronic acid, Q10 coenzyme
  • Biomaterials: biopolymers, bioplastics
  • Agriculture: biofertilizers, biopesticides, algae fertilizers
  • Food & Beverages: meat/cheese/wine starters, meat preservatives, cellular agriculture, flavors, plant-based substitutes for meat products, low carb drinks, fermented drinks

ELARA ST can be controlled with the innovative SCADA software LEONARDO 3.0 - a smart and user-friendly controller designed to provide a high level of automated management of the fermentation/cultivation processes. LEONARDO 3.0 offers remote access via PC, tablet or smartphone, with QR code scanning or dedicated portal.

Elara ST can be equipped with Solaris bioreactor accessories including circulation chillers (CHILLER), a sterile sampling system (LEDA), a thermoregulation station (THERMOBOX) and a gas analyzer (METIS).

Photobioreactor are specifically developed for microalgae growth and are therefore equipped with a light source. This light source meets the microalgae needs in terms of radiation wavelength and intensity. It should be programmed to simulate a day-night cycle so that cellular processes are not compromised. Microalgae are photoautotrophic unicellular microorganisms, meaning they use light radiation to run photosynthesis and turn sunlight and carbon dioxide into oxygen etc. Single cells can gather in chains or other shapes. Microalgae offer a variety of metabolic products that are potentially appealing for the nutraceutical market.
